Why do my pipes bang and my taps keep leaking?

Short answer

A bang when water flow stops can be water hammer or a pipe moving against its supports; unusually high pressure can contribute to noise and wear. Leaking taps can also have worn washers, cartridges or seals. The sound or leak alone cannot confirm the cause, so recurring problems need an assessment.

Why pipes can bang

A sudden change in water flow can make pipework move and create a knock, especially when a valve closes quickly. Loose supports, pressure conditions or a particular appliance or tap may also be involved. Note when the sound occurs and which fixture was just used.

Why taps may keep leaking

A worn washer, cartridge, seal or damaged seating surface can cause a drip. If a tap leaks again soon after repair, ask whether pressure, debris or wear elsewhere is contributing. A plumber can check the fitting and measure pressure rather than relying on the sound alone.

When should you call a plumber?

  • Pipes repeatedly knock when taps, toilets or appliances stop using water.
  • Several taps leak or leaks return after repair.
  • Water pressure is unusually forceful or changes suddenly.
  • You see dampness, staining or other signs of a leak.

What affects the cost?

Cost depends on whether the cause is a single fitting, pipe supports, pressure control or a wider plumbing issue. The number of fixtures, parts and access to concealed pipework can change the scope. Ask what checks are included and whether any repair is priced separately.
