Why does my drain keep blocking?

Short answer

A drain that blocks again may have an underlying problem still in the line, such as root entry, pipe damage, a low section that holds debris or a build-up that was not fully cleared. Clearing can restore flow, but a camera inspection may be needed to identify why it keeps happening.

What can cause the same drain to block?

Roots can enter through joints, a damaged or uneven section can catch waste, and grease or other material can build up inside a pipe. The symptoms alone do not tell you which cause applies. First identify whether the affected line is sewer or stormwater and which fixtures or pits are involved.

What does a camera inspection add?

After access is cleared, a drain camera can show the condition of the section it reaches and help distinguish a visible obstruction from pipe damage or another restriction. Access, standing water and the blockage itself can limit how far the camera travels, so the inspection should explain what was and was not seen.

What can I note before calling?

Write down which fixtures are slow, whether more than one is affected, how often the blockage returns and whether an outdoor pit is overflowing. If sewage is backing up, avoid using affected fixtures and arrange a prompt assessment.

When should you call a plumber?

  • The same drain blocks repeatedly after it has been cleared.
  • More than one fixture is slow or gurgling.
  • Sewage backs up inside, or an outdoor gully overflows.
  • A stormwater pit overflows toward the building.

What affects the cost?

The cost depends on whether the fault is at one fixture or farther along a shared line, access to the drain, the obstruction and equipment needed, and whether camera inspection, locating or a separate repair is required. Ask which steps are included in the quote before work begins.
